Chelsea have announced the signing of Portuguese star Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid for the rest of the season.

Reports suggest Chelsea will pay a £9 million loan fee and cover his wages as the 23-year-old was in London today (January 11) to complete his medical.

The Portuguese international is on the move, having become frustrated with Diego Simeone’s style of football in Madrid.

The questions now are where Felix will fit in at Chelsea and will the fee be worth it?

Felix’s versatility across the forward line and behind the striker means there are plenty of ways they can fit him into the line up.

The number of injuries Chelsea have picked up since the World Cup break pushed them to make this move.

They are now without attackers Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja and Christian Pulisic and Felix could fill some of those gaps.

In terms of the cost, Atletico Madrid were never going to let him go cheap after signing him from Benfica for £111m in 2019. They have also extended his contract to protect his value if they are to sell him permanently in the summer.

Todd Boehly’s approach often appears to be scattergun as he learns the ropes in football, but he is eager to bring success to Stamford Bridge and acted quickly to beat Arsenal and Manchester United for this signing.

It may well be a clever acquisition for Chelsea, who are currently tenth in the Premier League and need a spark to revive their season under Graham Potter.
