Liverpool loanee Sergi Canos has become a better player for his spell at Brentford and would be welcome back to Griffin Park next season - despite needing to improve parts of his game.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring in Saturday's 5-1 romp at Huddersfield Town to take the midfielder's season's tally to seven goals in 38 appearances.

The Spaniard, who picked up the goal of the season award at the Bees' end of season dinner on Sunday, will have been encouraged by seeing the likes of 22-year-old Kevin Stewart, 18-year-old Sheyi Ojo and 20-year-old Jordon Ibe appearing for the Reds under boss Jurgen Klopp.

Canos, who made his first appearances for the Spain U19 squad this season, signed a half-season loan deal at Griffin Park last August under Klopp's predecessor Brendan Rodgers before extending that deal in December.

He will get the chance to impress his German replacement when pre-season preparations start in the summer and the former Borussia Dortmund chief's head will have been turned by Canos' contribution to Brentford's Championship campaign this term.

Making waves: Spanish midfielder Sergi Canos has been a bright spark in Brentford's up and down season

But, if the former Barcelona youth player is deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield or Klopp feels he needs another year of Championship football under his belt, Bees head coach Dean Smith would like to think his club would be first in line to gain his services.

"We'd like Sergi Canos to come back next season," he said on Saturday.

"He has done excellently for us and got a goal to set us on our way.

"He just has an energy and enthusiasm to play football and he puts smiles on people's faces.

"But he is only 19 and still learning the game and still needs to know where to go without the ball at times.

"He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and I'd like to think that we've played a part in his development so far.

"We hope he has a bright future and if there's an opportunity for him to come back to us we'd love it."
