Brentford boss Mark Warburton will reflect on leading the club into the Championship as his greatest achievement, while celebrating Bees fans pinch themselves.

Alan Judge's 30th minute penalty gave the Bees a 1-0 win over Preston North End and defeats for Leyton Orient and Rotherham United secured elevation to the second tier of English football for the first time in more than 20 years.

More than 9,000 fans celebrated on the Griffin Park pitch as news filtered through of the Millers' dramatic last minute 6-4 defeat at Molineaux - the scores had been level at 4-4 as the clock hit 90 minutes.

Warburton gave up life as a City slicker to pursue a career in football that started in player development with Watford's academy before eventually taking charge of the Bees following former boss Uwe Rosler's exit to Wigan Athletic in December.

The 51-year-old former sporting director, who has warned Brentford will not be in the Championship to make up the numbers, has already admitted promotion surpassed anything he achieved as a banker.

Rosler, who saw his Wigan men beat Reading 3-0 as they warm up for a Championship play-off campaign, led the tributes to his former club.

“Very well done to Brentford, the boys, the staff and the club deserve the promotion," he said.

“They were outstanding in the time I was there and they have continued with that, I’m so happy for them because I know how much work has been put in place to reach promotion.”

Brentford, still six points adrift of League leaders Wolves, were promoted as champions in 1992 and travel to MK Dons on Monday knowing they must win to remain in the hunt for the title.
