Sir – With still more than a month to go of the ghastliness of total traffic chaos here in Richmond, I have a constructive suggestion.

It comes out of watching people do something that is totally illegal (but sensible).

Living here off the Hill, if we want to go over the bridge we have two choices.

• The A316 (thus avoiding Richmond Bridge, but sitting in sometimes interminable queues down Church Road and then the A316).

• Driving up to the Star and Garter and then along Petersham Road and finally over the bridge (can take anything up to half an hour.) Neither is satisfactory.

A number of people have taken the law into their own hands and drive the wrong way down the tiny 'no entry'

bit of The Vineyard that enables them to join Hill Rise and immediately turn right down what I think is called Nightingale Hill to join Petersham Road.

Indeed when I was walking up this very short stretch of road the other day two cars went past me the wrong way, so I can’t help thinking this is now something that is happening very regularly.

Why not temporarily reverse the traffic flow for this small stretch of road and save quite ridiculously lengthy journeys (emissions, tempers et al) to get what should be a very small distance?

Once the chaos is over and things return to normal the traffic flow could be reversed.

It need not be signed as a diversion, for it is incredibly narrow so not suitable for heavy traffic, but it would help to keep those of us living in this area sane.
