Sir – Valerie Jackson should bear the following in mind when worrying about her friend in the north of England being offended by what the RTT prints without asterisks (letters, September 26).

If her friend has never heard of the word, she cannot be offended; if she has, then she will already know what it means and will put its use in context.

Also, when asterisks are used, only readers who already know a word will realise what the asterisks stand for; those who don’t will either have to ask or remain in ignorance.

Both ways, no one is well served by this pretence. And quite frankly, my dear, I don’t give a d***.
