Sir – You rightly criticise spelling and punctuation errors in council and other public notices (Readers’ disgust at council’s grammatical gaffes, Richmond and Twickenham Times, September 19).
It’s just a pity that your own proof-readers are not as eagleeyed as some of the local residents.
In the same issue, you spell Councillor Serge Lourie’s name as Louire (Council leader writes to river protesters, p5) and spell the unit of measurement “meters” rather than “metres” (Builder’s tactics anger residents, on page 10).
Worse, though, in the very article that encourages readers to report other “howlers”, you quote a resident as saying that a spelling mistake on a water bottle is telling local children that “basically its okay to be too lazy to check your spelling”.
The words glasshouses, throwing and stones come to mind for some reason in this particular case.
