After reportedly visiting Number 10 on Monday, Zac Goldsmith has said he is doing ‘all he can’ to ensure the expansion of Heathrow is not approved.

A decision by the Government on airport expansion in the South East is expected soon, after months of delays.

Richmond Park and North Kingston MP Zac Goldsmith promised to resign if then-Prime Minister David Cameron approved a third runway at Heathrow.

However, he told journalists in December he later regretted that decision.

In relation to Heathrow, Mr Goldsmith said on Tuesday: “My views are known and on the record.

“I won’t be providing a running commentary.

“Meanwhile I am doing all I can to secure the right decision.”

Two weeks ago Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson branded Heathrow expansion a ‘fantasy’ destined for the ‘dustbin’ after being excluded from a key cabinet committee that will decide on airport expansion.

The move was seen as a potential signal that Prime Minister Theresa May is getting ready to approve a new runway at Heathrow.

Back in July the leaders of Richmond, Wandsworth and Hillingdon councils wrote to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to threaten legal action if the Heathrow expansion is approved.

The Government’s decision will be based on the Airports Commission’s findings.

However, these were questioned when the target it set Gatwick for 2030 was surpassed in August.

The West Sussex airport had a historic year, breaking the world record for passengers travelling on a single runway.

It also served 42 million passengers in 12 months from August 2015, a 5.7 per cent on the previous year.

Long-haul flights boomed by 25 per cent.
