Yet more of Richmond’s parks and open spaces have been recognised with the prestigious Green Flag award.

Ham Village Green and Kew’s Westerly Ware were both given the accolade, as part of the scheme that began in 1996 to recognise the best green spaces in the country.

They join 16 other locations across the borough already able to display the green flags for a year, before re-applying for the status.

Louise Greenacre, of the Westerly Ware Association, said: "We are delighted to have been selected for this award and are grateful for the longstanding support of so many local people.

"The park was originally created as a First World War memorial so an award in this centenary year is especially welcome."

The award acknowledges achievements in park facilities, maintenance and community engagement.

Richmond Council cabinet member for environment Councillor Pamela Fleming said: "We know how important the environment is to our residents, which is why we are doing everything we can to protect and enhance our green spaces."

She added the council had spent £3m on park and environment, with some money still remaining in the budget.

Other locations to have been awarded to status include Richmond Green and Crane Park.
